THE CBC: Calls mount for school board action after vice chair links LGBTQ debate and cannibalism
TORONTO STAR: Complaints flood Catholic school board over trustee’s bid to add pedophilia, bestiality to debate on inclusivity
TORONTO STAR: Michael Del Grande is out of order on human rights...
His actions “send a strong message to your LGBTQ2S students: that their identities are not valid, that they do not matter, and that they are not welcome in your schools,” said Maura Lawless, executive director of 519, a city agency that serves the LGBTQ community.
So what can be done to heal the rift that his actions — and the board’s endless bickering over these basic human rights — have caused?
Lawless called for Del Grande’s resignation. There doesn’t seem to be any way for the board to force that. But it could meet her other demand and publicly denounce his actions and affirm the rights of LGBTQ students.
That’s the least they can do after this circus act.
It bears repeating that if this board continues to leave open doubts about its commitment to rights for all, support will only grow for another option: an end to public funding for Catholic schools.
