The issue

We have been given the answers in how to slow global warming (stronger environmental protections), but without the support of those in power, not enough will be done. I want to see a reversal of the environmental destruction within my lifetime. David Attenborough has highlighted how important it is to start local. By implementing local 'no catch' areas, much larger parts of the ocean are being replenished. Can we act now? Can we lead by example?

Bottom trawling is a destructive fishing practice that harms marine ecosystems, decimates fish populations, and damages the ocean floor. This method indiscriminately sweeps up everything in its path, causing irreversible damage to vital marine habitats. Scientific studies have shown that bottom trawling can destroy deep-sea corals and sponges, which are crucial for the ocean's biodiversity and health.

It is crucial for our local environment and future generations to put a halt to this method and protect our marine ecosystems. We are calling on our Member of Parliament, Josh Burns, to appeal to the environment minister, Steve Dimopoulos, urging him to attend the international meeting of Governments where they will agree on protecting at least 30% of our oceans.

By attending this international meeting in a few short weeks, Australia can exhibit leadership and commitment to the global fight against climate change and marine conservation. Local 'no catch' areas have proven to be effective, allowing ecosystems to replenish and thrive. Implementing such measures locally would not only benefit Victoria but also set a valuable precedent for other communities around the world.

The time for action is now. We need our government representatives to support meaningful policies that protect our oceans and combat climate change. Together, we can make a significant impact and ensure that future generations inherit a healthier planet. Sign this petition to urge our leaders to stop bottom trawling and advocate for ocean conservation at the international level. Let's make a difference today.

Further Reading:

The Australian government provides various forms of support to the fisheries industry, including both direct financial assistance and regulatory frameworks that aim to promote sustainability. While the exact amount of subsidies can vary, Australia's annual contribution is around $400 million. This includes programs like the Adjustment Subsidy Program (ASP) and government grants for improving efficiency, according to the NSW Department of Primary Industries and the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation.
