Protect Our Neighbourhood: Reconsider Cycle Lane Proposals on Titwood Road & Darnley Road

Protect Our Neighbourhood: Reconsider Cycle Lane Proposals on Titwood Road & Darnley Road
The Issue
Titwood Road and Darnley Road are vital commuting routes not only for the people who live here but for the thousands who rely on them every day to travel across the southside of Glasgow.
We the undersigned, call on Glasgow City Council to reconsider the proposed cycle lanes on these roads as part of the Glasgow City Network.
While we support safer cycling and active travel these proposals raise serious concerns for both residents and commuters.
Pending funding the City Network Phase 1 preliminary design will be highlighting a number of routes for progression to the developed/technical design stage:
Route 9 - Titwood Road West
Route 6B - Darnley Road
Route 22 - Shields Road
Route 23 - Maxwell Road
GCC Route - Nithsdale Road
Proposed Route 9 (Titwood Road from Haggs Road to Darnley Road) and Route 6B (Darnley Road from Titwood Road to Nithsdale Road) are a particular concern due to the volume of traffic heading to/from Newlands/Shawlands, Dumbreck, Hampden Park, Pollok Park, Morrisons, the M8/M77 and surrounding areas. These routes also serve Hutchesons' Grammer School and Shawlands Academy.
Our Concerns:
- Increased congestion: Removing road lanes will reduce capacity and worsen traffic on already busy routes, including Titwood Road, Dumbreck Road, Haggs Road and Darnley Road — impacting daily journeys for commuters and local travel alike
- Loss of parking: The removal of on-street parking will directly affect residents and displace vehicles into surrounding streets, increasing pressure across the wider area
- Impact on essential services: Reduced road space may delay deliveries, public transport, and emergency services
- Air quality: Increased congestion and idling traffic risk worsening air pollution for those living and travelling through these areas
- Questionable need: Existing nearby routes already provide similar connections, raising concerns about whether these additional changes are necessary i.e. GCC route (Nithsdale Road) connects Nithsdale Road via St Andrews Drive to Haggs Road omitting the need for duplication via route 9 and 6B serving the same end (connecting Haggs Road to Nithsdale Road)
- Low Usage and High Cost: Underutilised and poorly designed lanes are a waste of public funds and unnecessary use of valuable urban space
We urge Glasgow City Council to do the following:
- Pause and review these proposals and properly assess their impact on both residents and commuters engaging meaningfully with the community before proceeding
- Consider removing cycle routes 9 and route 6B and other routes that will have an adverse impact on the local area due to the aforementioned reasons
