Say No to a Nursing Home in Residential Areas

The Issue

We, the concerned residents of the Louis Wilson neighborhoods, strongly object to the proposed establishment of a nursing home (or any commercial property) within our residential areas. We believe that such a facility would have detrimental effects on our community and compromise the quality of life for both residents and their families. We urge local authorities to consider alternative locations for this nursing home that are more suitable and respectful of our neighborhood's character.

1. Preservation of Residential Character:
Our neighborhoods have long been cherished as peaceful residential areas, providing safe havens for families and individuals seeking tranquility away from commercial zones. Introducing a nursing home into these areas would disrupt this delicate balance, leading to increased traffic congestion, noise pollution, and potential safety concerns.

2. Negative Impact on Property Values:
Healthcare facilities like nursing homes have the potential to significantly impact property values in surrounding residential areas.

3. Traffic Congestion:
Nursing homes typically attract high volumes of vehicular traffic throughout the day due to staff shifts, visiting family members, medical personnel visits, and supply deliveries.

4. Noise Pollution:
Nursing homes often operate 24/7 with various activities taking place around-the-clock including medical equipment usage, emergency vehicle arrivals/departures, maintenance work, etc., all contributing significantly to noise pollution levels in nearby areas. This disturbance will disrupt the peace we currently enjoy within our community.

5. Safety Concerns:
The presence of a large-scale healthcare facility like a nursing home may raise legitimate safety concerns among residents living nearby. While nursing homes prioritize security measures, the potential for increased foot traffic and unfamiliar faces in our neighborhoods could compromise the safety of our families, especially vulnerable populations such as children and the elderly.

6. Zoning

The proposed relocation of Brandon Court doesn't even apply to the NC zone. In their own zoning regulations, the "Neighborhood Centers contain a variety of commercial activities including groceries, convenience stores, other small retail shops , offices, and personal services. Typically no one use should occupy an area larger than 20,000 square feet to insure there are a variety of commercial uses and that no one use dominates a Neighborhood Center." Nursing homes are allowed on a conditional basis in the CC or RC zones, not in NC. Moreover, for R-12 residential areas, the regulations express that "It is the intent of this ordinance that existing
residential developments be protected from encroachment of undesirable and incompatible uses..."

We understand the importance of providing adequate care for our aging population, but we firmly believe that alternative locations exist within commercial or mixed-use areas that are better suited to accommodate a nursing home facility. We urge local authorities to consider these alternatives and protect the integrity of our Louis Wilson neighborhoods.

By signing this petition, we express our strong objection to a nursing home being established within residential areas and call upon decision-makers to find a more suitable location that respects both the needs of seniors and preserves the character of our beloved community.
