The Issue

In the United Kingdom, we fought long and hard to repeal Section 28, a discriminatory law that prevented the “promotion” of homosexuality by local authorities and schools. We were assured that educational facilities would no longer face interference by governing bodies in how they choose to celebrate and educate on these crucial issues. Yet, here we stand facing controlling measures again. Libraries, the sanctuaries of knowledge and celebration of diversity, are now being restricted by local councils from hosting celebration months, weeks, and days displays, alongside educational events.

This is not merely an echo of past injustice, limited only to Section 28 and its guarantees. It’s broader and graver. If one library display can be banned, then any display can be banned. It opens the door for censorship of any display or educational event that doesn’t align with the current political or ideological climate of a given council. Libraries should have the autonomy to provide educational resources and celebrate diverse cultures, histories, and communities without interference.

Celebration months and educational events are pivotal for spreading awareness and promoting diverse societal values. They educate communities on crucial topics like LGBTQ+ history, Black History, Women's achievements, and the cultures of numerous minority groups. Removing or banning such displays undermines our collective societal growth and violates the essence of inclusive education.

What libraries choose to display should not be subject to the whims of governing councils. It’s essential that the UK government enacts legislation to protect libraries from such overreach, guaranteeing that they can make their own decisions regarding displays and educational content. This autonomy not only respects the heritage of libraries but ensures a rich, ongoing discourse about diversity and inclusion in our communities.

Join us in urging the government to protect our libraries from overreach by local councils. By signing this petition, you are standing up for the rights of libraries to celebrate and educate on diverse issues independently. You are supporting the fight for a more inclusive society where education is truly free from prejudice and restriction. Sign the petition now and help create a future where our libraries remain bastions of knowledge and equality.
