Protect our inalienable right to farm

The Issue

Growing up, many of us learned the basics of survival: food, water, and shelter. These are not just necessities but fundamental aspects of human life, akin to inalienable rights. While the Founding Fathers enshrined several rights within the founding documents of our nation, not every right was explicitly listed—humorously noting that even the right to get out of bed was beyond enumeration. Yet, what remains clear is that our rights are inherently ours and must be exerted and protected.

By design we need food to survive, which means it is one of, if not the most important, inalienable right. No one should be able to tell you you cannot raise or grow your own food on your own property, which was normal until we allowed government entities to start removing our rights and making us more dependent on stores and nontraditional suppliers. Many government officials claim to want to lower food prices. If that is the case, then more supply, in our capitalist society, lowers prices. They claim to want us to have a healthier food supply. Well, if we know what goes into our food and there aren't crazy chemicals and suspected carcinogens in it, then we have a healthier food supply. They talk about being more sustainable. Well, what is more sustainable than raising your own food, feeding waste and excess to your own chickens or other livestock, and then using products from your livestock to fertilize your own fruits and vegetables, and improve the soil? They claim that food is a matter of national security. Well, if that is so, then what makes us more secure than more people raising their own food throughout the country? They claim to want to import less and export more. Well, again, the right to farm for everyone who owns their own property would allow that easily. We must recognize and uphold our right to farm as a protected, inalienable right.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), there are over 2 million farms across the country, contributing greatly to both our nutritional needs and economic prosperity. Yet, restrictive zoning laws, overregulation, and lack of support from local and federal institutions are placing undue burdens on farmers and individuals who could otherwise provide more for themselves and their families. The decline of family-owned farms, gardening, and the ability to raise livestock,  and the centralization of agricultural production, threaten food security and the cultural heritage of all Americans.

We demand that lawmakers at the local, state, and federal levels immediately enact protections for our right to farm as businesses and individuals. Policies must be crafted to support sustainable agricultural practices, lift unnecessary limitations that stifle growth and innovation in the agricultural sector, and allow us the right to provide for ourselves if we so wish. "Right to Farm" laws must be strengthened and more extensively implemented to ensure that future generations can continue to cultivate the land without suffering undue interference or restriction, to have healthy food, and to have ample food sources free of unnecessary contamination.

Join us in asserting our inalienable rights and safeguarding the future of farming in America. Stand with local farmers and with all who believe in sustainable, independent agriculture. Sign this petition to affirm that the right to farm is as fundamental as the right to life itself. They are in fact tied together due to the nature of human life and our necessities to live. Every signature brings us closer to a future where farming thrives as a respected and protected tradition, vital to American identity and a cornerstone of our inalienable rights.
