Most importantly, our beloved Orange-Bellied Parrots heavily rely on eucalyptus trees and other native plants for their survival. Tragically, the future of these parrots—and indeed other native fauna—is being jeopardised by plans to cut down extensive areas of eucalyptus trees.

The Orange-Bellied Parrot is one of the most critically endangered species in Australia, with fewer than 50 left in the wild, according to the latest reports from conservation groups like BirdLife Australia. They depend heavily on eucalyptus habitats for foraging, sheltering, and nesting. In areas like the south-east coastal regions, where eucalyptus trees are under threat due to urban expansion and land development, the survival of these parrots hangs in the balance.

This isn’t just about trees; it’s about preserving a whole ecosystem. When we destroy eucalyptus trees, we obliterate not only potential nesting sites but also food sources, and shelter for countless other species. We risk losing valuable biodiversity that can't simply be replaced once gone. Studies show that ecosystems with rich biodiversity are more resilient and capable of sustaining life, contributing to both environmental health and human well-being.

We demand that local authorities prioritize the protection of critical eucalyptus habitats. This can be achieved by halting all development plans that encroach upon these areas and investing in sustainable alternatives. Additionally, establishing conservation easements and protected areas, alongside reforestation projects with native species, would demonstrate a commitment to preserving our natural heritage.
