The Issue

Residents are increasingly concerned about speeding and antisocial driving on Woodhill Road and the surrounding roads near the Lake Grounds.

What should be a safe area for families, pedestrians, cyclists and local residents has become a source of growing concern. Excessive speed, aggressive driving, engine revving and loud exhaust noise are affecting the safety and quality of life of those who live nearby.

The impact of this behaviour is already being felt within our community. Three local families have lost beloved cats after they were struck by vehicles on Woodhill Road. While these incidents are deeply upsetting, they also highlight the wider safety concerns shared by many residents. We should not have to wait for a serious injury before meaningful action is taken.

The roads affected include Woodhill Road, Battery Road, Pier Road, Lake Road, Battery Lane, Beach Road West, Woodlands and The Esplanade.

Residents regularly report vehicles travelling at excessive speeds throughout the day and into the evening. Many families are becoming reluctant to allow children to walk or cycle independently, while older residents and dog walkers often feel less confident crossing the road.

The issue extends beyond road safety. Frequent engine revving, racing and excessively noisy exhausts often continue late into the night, disrupting sleep and reducing the enjoyment of our homes and public spaces.

Our community is asking North Somerset Council, Portishead Town Council, Avon and Somerset Police, and other relevant authorities to work with residents to introduce practical measures that improve safety and discourage antisocial driving. These could include:

  • Appropriate traffic calming measures.
  • A review of existing speed limits.
  • Increased enforcement of speed and vehicle noise regulations.
  • Greater police presence and targeted patrols.
  • The use of suitable monitoring or surveillance where appropriate.
  • Everyone deserves to feel safe in their own neighbourhood. By taking proportionate action now, we can help reduce the risk of future incidents and make the roads around the Lake Grounds safer and quieter for everyone.

Please sign this petition to show your support for practical action that will help protect our community and improve the safety and wellbeing of everyone who lives, works and visits this area.
