Protect Our Beautiful Common Property from Harmful Chemicals

Protect Our Beautiful Common Property from Harmful Chemicals
The Issue
Hi Neighbors –
I grew up in Mt Park, my family’s community since 1974. One of my favorite parts of living here has always been our common property woods. We all know they are special. We can literally step out of our front doors and be surrounded by incredible wildlife, lush forests, and – most importantly – fresh air.
Unfortunately, invasive species are destroying our beloved, native woods, and there is no question that we need to take immediate action. However, the Mt Park Homeowners Association and the Common Property Committee are using harmful chemicals which are not safe for the community, wildlife, or our drinking water. This decision to use harmful chemicals on invasive species is in direct violation of our bylaws and directly threatens community health. We need your continued help to fight it!
The chemical that is most concerning is Element 3A (sprayed in multiple locations, including Preakness Park where our children and pets play, since May 2023). According to Dow AgroSciences, LLC, A subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company, Element 3A is a Hazardous Chemical. Vapors cause severe eye burns which may result in permanent impairment of vision, even blindness. Harmful if swallowed.
This summer, we presented 100+ signatures from concerned Mt Park residents who would like to see more environmental and improved safety procedures taken to the Board, who acknowledged our concerns and assured us that they will be addressed and that better environmental approaches will be used. Full documentation of the spraying of Element 3A was also presented to the Oswego Lake Watershed Council (OLWS) who continue to financially support Mt Park’s unacceptable practices for the rehabilitation.
In a recent follow-up email, Kevin House, President of the Mt. Park Homeowners Association confirmed they would continue to use the same chemicals. Workers returned on November 24 and sprayed chemicals – including Element 3A.
We need your help to make our voices louder. There are several immediate actions you can take:
- Sign the petition.
- Help us collect signatures by passing the petition along to as many people as possible.
- Ask them to do the same.
- Be extra loud and email the Mt Park HOA, letting them know you want them to stop: BoardOfDirectors@mtparkhoa.com
Thank you,
Carrie Asby
