Why should this matter to you??!!
What would you do if you received a phone call from your grand-child calling for help only to realize it was artificial intelligence on the other end of the line? Artificial intelligence has created new and dangerous forms of fraud. A voice-cloning technology can now replicate a loved one's voice in matter of seconds. Scammers are using this technology to call seniors, pretending to be grandchildren, police officers, or government officials in distress urgently demanding for money and that "there is no time left!"
This is not a distant threat. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre reported that “fraud victims reported losing over $569 million in 2023” (Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre [CAFC], 2024). Older adults are significantly impacted, particularly those who live alone, rely on landlines to communicate, or may experience cognitive and hearing impairments. As the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security warns, “cybercriminals continue to adopt new technologies, including artificial intelligence, to improve the scale and effectiveness of their activities” making AI scammers harder to detect for elders (Canadian Centre for Cyber Security [CCCS], 2023, p. 6).
We know one of the most common forms of elder abuse, is financial exploitation. The Advocacy Centre for the Elderly states very clearly that “financial abuse is one of the most common forms of elder abuse in Ontario” (Advocacy Centre for the Elderly [ACE], 2023).
If this is true, Ontario needs to act fast and NOW! The damage is not only financial, it is a cycle of trauma, anxiety and shame and huge loss of trust that lingers as they age. Quite frankly, many seniors never report the fraud because they feel ashamed and embarrassed!
Protection should not depend on whether a senior can recognize emerging technology. We must catch it sooner and protect our loved ones from this ever continuing!
