The Issue

My connection to the forest in the Fairy Creek region is profound. It isn't just about the trees for me; it's about preserving sacred spaces that have stood for centuries. These ancient forests are not just a part of the natural landscape; they are the lungs of our planet, providing critical habitat for countless species and offering a glimpse into the untamed nature that once covered vast regions. The Fairy Creek region, located on southwest Vancouver Island, is a potent symbol of Canada’s rich natural heritage, and it’s personal to me because of my deep commitment to ensuring that such majestic natural wonders stand the test of time for future generations.

We are urging the Province of British Columbia and the Ministry of Forests to immediately reconsider the approval of logging in cut block 8027, which lies within the traditional territory of the Pacheedaht First Nation, with neighbouring Nations, including Ditidaht and Huu-ay-aht, closely connected to the area. This is more than a regional issue; it touches the heart of our collective climate responsibilities at a time when ancient forests are more critical than ever.

The loss of these old-growth forests has dire environmental implications. According to the Government of Canada, forests play an essential role in capturing and storing carbon dioxide, a key factor in regulating global climate. Removing these forests releases carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere, accelerating the impacts of climate change. The biodiversity within these forests is unparalleled, with many species relying on this habitat, some of which are already at risk due to habitat loss and climate change.

Furthermore, these forest lands hold profound cultural, spiritual, and economic value for the First Nations who have stewarded these lands for millennia. Logging in these regions disregards the rights and traditions of the Pacheedaht, Ditidaht, and Huu-ay-aht Nations, undermining the trust and collaboration necessary for reconciliation and sustainable coexistence.

There’s an opportunity to act on this now. The protection of Cut Block 8027 offers a unique chance for British Columbia to lead by example in sustainable forestry management by implementing conservation-friendly practices that respect indigenous sovereignty and protect vital ecosystems.

We appeal to Premier David Eby, the Ministry of Forests, and all relevant stakeholders to prioritize the protection of these vital old-growth forests. Let us come together as communities, Indigenous peoples, and government bodies to forge a path that honours both the rights of the land and the rights of its people.

Please join us in protecting this irreplaceable ecosystem for future generations. Sign this petition to support the preservation of the Fairy Creek region’s old-growth forests before it’s too late.
