Protect NY State Corrections Officers: Stop the Staffing Decrease & HALT

The Issue

Currently, Corrections Officers across New York State are forced to deal with a 30% staff reduction, which has become a concerning norm rather than an exception. This is not just jeopardizing the safety of the officers but also straining their ability to effectively manage the prison system. The problem stems from a growing disregard for the personal and professional wellbeing of the officers who dedicate their lives to ensuring our safety. These are the men and women walking AMERICA'S TOUGHEST BEAT.
To highlight the severity of this issue further, as per the data from Bureau of Labor Statistics, 'Correctional Officers and Jailers' have a significantly higher rate of non-fatal work-related injuries and illnesses compared to other occupations. The reduced staffing, undoubtedly, will increase these risks. In light of these alarming facts, this petition calls on the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision to step up and take responsibility. Adequate staffing levels are not just a matter of appropriate working conditions, but fundamental to ensuring the safe and effective running of our prisons.

Take a stand with us against this unfair treatment. The bravery of our corrections officers should not be met with exploitation but the utmost respect and dignified working conditions. Please sign this petition to halt the staffing decrease and prevent the overworking of our NY State Corrections officers.

END THE HALT ACT

  • The HALT Act (S2836) Since HALT was enacted in 2022, assaults on correctional staff have significantly increased. Some of our leaders are doing more protect criminals than they are to protect the men and women who have to deal with them on a day to day basis. This act jeopardizes the safety of our correction officers across the state.

- Governor Kathy Hochul has now (current of the strikes across the state) added words to her '25-'26 budget which pave the way to CLOSE 5 MORE PRISON FACILITIES.

In honor of my father, who served as a Corrections Officer in New York State for more than three decades, along with his father and grandfather before him, and many of my uncles, cousins, and neighbors, I am raising this significant issue to secure the well-being of our Corrections Officers. These brave men faithfully continue to walk America's hardest beat. Hold the line. Back the blue.
