Many of you may have seen the recent media coverage where Doug Faulkner, the TANS Board Chair, spoke about the current situation facing Nova Scotia’s trucking sector. In his comments, he suggested that the Board is “not being thrown to the wolves” and that there’s “support to move ahead.”
While that might sound encouraging on the surface, many of us on the ground see things differently. It appears that the Board’s leadership has aligned itself closely with government direction rather than standing firmly for the independent members they represent. Collaboration is important — but collaboration should not mean compliance without consultation.
We want to be clear: we are not against working with government to develop a modernized framework. In fact, that’s exactly what the Board should be doing — leading those discussions on behalf of its members with honesty and transparency. Unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case. We remain open to genuine dialogue and are willing to help identify real solutions for any issues that are recognized, but this must be done with transparency, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to protecting the livelihoods of local operators and small businesses.
Faulkner’s focus on “free trade” and “being the best option” overlooks the reality facing those who have built their businesses under long-standing frameworks now being dismantled in the name of modernization and competitiveness.
This is not about resisting change — it’s about ensuring fairness, accountability, and a strong voice for those most affected. Members deserve representation that advocates for them, not one that simply echoes government messaging.
