Growing up in North Carolina, my family often visited the pristine landscapes of our national parks, including the breathtaking trails of the Great Smoky Mountains and the serene Blue Ridge Parkway. These parks have always been places of unparalleled beauty, untouched by modern commercialism, and provided countless families the opportunity to connect with nature. The Roadless Rule was implemented as a vital safeguard to preserve these public lands from the encroachment of roads and infrastructure that can disrupt wildlife, water quality, and the natural beauty of these treasured spaces.

Alarming plans are now afoot to dismantle this crucial protection, driven by commercial interests that seek to exploit these areas for financial gain, threatening to transform our beloved national parks into just another commercial landscape. The Trump Administration’s proposal to repeal the Roadless Rule could lead to the construction of roads, hotels, and other facilities, significantly altering the unspoiled character of places like Pisgah National Forest, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and the Blue Ridge Parkway. These areas are national treasures and vital refuges for hundreds of wildlife species, critical clean air and water resources, and provide a haven for those looking to escape the hustle of city life to reconnect with the natural world.

Environmental studies have shown that such developments can have devastating impacts on ecosystems. Road construction disrupts migration patterns of species, fragments habitats, and increases pollution risks due to increased vehicle access.
