Protect NICU Babies from exploitation on social media!
The Issue
PROTECT NICU BABIES FROM EXPLOITATION ON SOCIAL MEDIA
Social media has become a powerful global tool for sharing information, connecting communities, and raising awareness. But alongside these benefits, a deeply troubling trend has emerged: the exploitation of vulnerable Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) babies for views, profit, and online engagement.
Across various regions — particularly where healthcare oversight is weak and private neonatal “nurseries” operate with little regulation — individuals and organizations are filming critically ill newborns and posting their images and videos online without consent. These facilities often lack trained staff, proper hygiene standards, and ethical safeguards, placing babies at even greater risk. NICU babies are among the most fragile members of society. Many are fighting for their lives from their very first breath.
Yet thousands of social media accounts now post, repost, or recycle unconsented footage of these infants — including babies in severe distress, babies who have died, and even images exposing their genitalia. Hundreds of new accounts appear every day, using these babies’ suffering to grow audiences, solicit donations, and generate advertising revenue.
This is not “education.” This is not “awareness.” This is exploitation. These practices violate basic ethical standards and fundamental privacy rights. Neither the babies nor their families have consented to the public display of their most vulnerable moments. Many of the infants shown appear to be abandoned, making them even more susceptible to abuse and misuse. Documented harms to vulnerable babies:
INFECTION RISKS: Introducing phones, cameras, and unnecessary handling into what should be a sterile environment dramatically increases the risk of life‑threatening infections for premature and critically ill babies.
TOXIC STRESS: Bright lights, loud noises, and repeated manipulation for filming can trigger “toxic stress,” which is known to impair neurodevelopment. Many videos also show babies being repeatedly oiled with paraffin-based products that are not recommended for neonates and can damage the skin barrier.
HARMFUL OR STAGED PRACTICES: Some viral “treatment” or “traditional care” videos have been exposed as staged performances designed to provoke distress for engagement. These practices are unsafe, outdated, and performed solely to attract attention online.
EXPOSURE TO HATE AND RIDICULE: Shockingly, comment sections often include ridicule, insults, and even sexualized remarks about newborns’ bodies. This dehumanization has no place in any society.
What Must Change:
1. Mandatory Consent Requirements Social media platforms must require verified parental or guardian consent before any images or videos of NICU babies can be posted.
2. Strict Prohibition of Exploitative Content Platforms must enforce clear rules banning the use of NICU footage for entertainment, engagement farming, or profit. Only verified educational or non-profit medical content should be permitted.
3. Immediate Removal of Harmful Material Content showing genitalia, violence, or mistreatment of infants must be removed immediately. Currently, countless disturbing videos remain online even after thousands of reports — an unacceptable failure of platform responsibility.
Why Your Voice Matters: By signing this petition, you are demanding that social media companies take responsibility for the exploitation occurring on their platforms. Your support can push Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and others to implement stronger protections, enforce their own policies, and safeguard the dignity and privacy of NICU babies and their families. Together, we can ensure that social media becomes a space for genuine education and ethical awareness — not exploitation. Please sign the petition today and help protect the most vulnerable among us.
