Protect Magoebaskloof – South Africa’s Green Gem Under Threat

The Issue

In Limpopo’s misty mountains lies Magoebaskloof, where rare Cape Parrots call from treetops above crystal streams winding through ancient forests – a sanctuary for wildlife and a beloved home for the local community. Now its peace and purity are under imminent threat from a proposed 24-hour fuel station. We refuse to let this happen.

Magoebaskloof is no ordinary place – it’s one of the last refuges of the endangered Cape Parrot (South Africa’s only endemic parrot), and home to other forest treasures like the vibrant Narina Trogon. For generations, people have hiked its trails and chased its waterfalls. This is our natural heritage – as vital to our identity as any monument or museum.

What’s at Stake

A panoramic view of the lush Magoebaskloof valley

If a huge petrol station and truck stop invades the heart of Magoebaskloof, we stand to lose:

  • Clean Water: The clear streams here supply drinking water to families downstream, and one fuel spill could poison them forever.
  • Wildlife: Endless noise, traffic, and light would shatter the quiet, driving away rare birds and other wildlife from their haven.
  • Community & Safety: Heavy trucks on winding roads at all hours and unfamiliar people around at night – shattering this peaceful community’s way of life.
  • Heritage & Tourism: No one comes here to see a gas station – they come for starry skies, fresh air, and unspoilt nature. A truck stop will scar the landscape and drive away the visitors who sustain the local economy. Once this place is spoiled, we can’t get it back.

This isn’t anti-development – it’s about responsible development. Across South Africa, people are pushing back against reckless projects that put profit over people and planet. Public pressure even forced Shell to halt oil testing on the Wild Coast – 400,000 citizens stood up to protect our oceans. We have that same power here. Magoebaskloof’s fight is every South African’s fight – if we allow nature to be trampled here, it can happen anywhere.
