The Issue

I'm not usually one to raise these kinds of alarms, but today feels different. In our beloved community, there's a plan to construct a data center adjacent to our cherished local zoo. This initiative might seem benign at first glance, but the implications for the zoo's animals are dire.

Imagine the noise pollution from construction and the ongoing hum and vibration of servers disrupting the peace of creatures who rely on a stable, serene environment to thrive. Imagine the mishmash of artificial lights interfering with their natural day-night cycles, causing stress to nocturnal species and confusing diurnal animals. The impacts are both immediate in the form of noise and long-term by disrupting their essential routines and habitat.

Visitors adore the zoo not only for its rare and beautiful animals but for its reputation as a space where conservation efforts are central. Sanctuary-inspired environments like this offer educational insights, cultural enrichment, and pure enjoyment for everyone, supporting wildlife preservation in a world increasingly dominated by urban development. Building a data center here risks unraveling the tapestry of conservation meticulously woven by dedicated zookeepers and conservationists.

We owe it to the animals who call this space home to safeguard their surroundings. By standing together, we can urge local authorities to reconsider the location of this proposed data center. It's not about halting progress, but about finding a balance between technological advancement and conservation.

We urge decision-makers to conduct comprehensive environmental assessments that consider alternative locations for the data center, potentially repurposing brownfield sites or unused industrial spaces, away from sensitive wildlife habitats.

This matter carries significant weight in our community, where the zoo is not just a location but a legacy. It's a legacy of education, protection, and wonder. Let's preserve it and allow future generations to experience the awe of seeing majestic creatures in places that honor their natural existence.

Join me in calling for the protection of our zoo and its inhabitants. Sign this petition to voice your concerns and let our community prioritize wildlife welfare over corporate developments. Together, we can make a difference.

Responded
Thank you for responding for this call to action and making your voice heard via this petition! Please know that I am doing everything in my power, legislatively and otherwise, to prevent this development next to our beloved zoo. I late filed a temporary moratorium on data center related development to give us time to pass policy and regulations around data centers. I have cosponsored that bill and have several amendments to strengthen it as well. Additionally, I’ve filed an appeal against the zoning administrators classification decision. I’m also speaking with many lawyers and experts in conjunction with zoo officials - literally going against it from every angle. Stay tuned and stay with me!
