Protect Lives: Install a Guardrail at the Eastbound I90 Ramp to Northbound I294

Protect Lives: Install a Guardrail at the Eastbound I90 Ramp to Northbound I294
The Issue
On November 15, 2024, after two days since he was last seen, Benjamin Oberto was found in his overturned vehicle in Willow Creek near the Eastbound I90 ramp to Northbound I294. The Illinois Tollway urgently needs to address the safety issues at this ramp by installing a guardrail to prevent further loss of life. With winter weather approaching, this issue of public safety needs to be addressed immediately.
The lack of protective barriers at this high-speed, high-traffic junction creates unnecessary risks for drivers and their families. In addition to Benjamin Oberto's accident, on June 7, 2024 a Jeep Wagoneer carrying nine passengers drove off the ramp and landed upright in two feet of water. A simple glance at available Google Street View images showcases a lack of cautionary signage, indications of damaged guardrails in the image from August 2022, and missing guardrails that were previously there in July 2015. A properly designed and strategically placed guardrail, combined with adequate signage indicating a sharp turn, could have prevented Ben's vehicle from overturning into a creek, possibly saving his life.
Ben leaves behind a grieving widow, a 3-year-old son, and a 21-year-old daughter. Immediate action must be taken to prevent other families from enduring the pain and loss they now live with each day.
