Protect Lives – Create Jennie’s Law: A Domestic Abuse Register for Ireland

The Issue

Introduction:
Jennie’s story is one of many preventable tragedies. She fell in love with a man who told her he had been away caring for his grandmother. In reality, he had been in prison for domestic abuse. By the time she discovered the truth, it was too late—she was trapped in a cycle of control and violence.

We need Jennie’s Law to prevent this from happening again. This law would create a Domestic Abuse Register and give Gardaí the power to proactively warn people if they are dating a convicted abuser.

What Jennie’s Law Would Do:
✅ "Right to Ask" – People could check if a partner has a violent past.
✅ "Right to Know" – Gardaí could warn individuals if their partner has a history of domestic abuse or has served prison time for it.
✅ Domestic Abuse Register – Tracks repeat offenders and those who have been imprisoned for abuse.
✅ Criminal Penalties for Deception – Punishes abusers who lie about their past to trap new victims.
✅ Stronger Safeguarding & Support – Immediate help for those at risk, including legal aid and protection services.

We are calling on the Irish Government to introduce Jennie’s Law and protect those most at risk. Domestic abuse survivors should not have to live in fear because abusers are free to hide their past.
