The Issue

On July 3rd, two Lane County residents were stopped by immigration officers near Eugene and taken into custody — with no warrants shown, no explanation given, and no assessment of whether they posed any risk to the community. They are our neighbors. And what happened to them could happen to anyone in our community.

Attorneys from Catholic Community Services of Lane County have filed emergency petitions in federal court, arguing the detention was unlawful. According to those filings, officers never identified themselves as immigration agents, never produced arrest warrants, and made no individualized determination about the people they were detaining. The attorneys also allege the two were targeted based on their appearance — not on any specific evidence of wrongdoing.

This is not just an immigration issue. It is a due process issue. Every person in this country has the right not to be detained without cause. Every community deserves to know that law enforcement — at any level — must follow the law.

Lane County residents are watching. Families are scared. Trust is eroding. We are calling on Oregon's congressional delegation and the Lane County Board of Commissioners to demand a full accounting of what happened on July 3rd, ensure affected individuals have access to legal counsel, and push for enforceable standards requiring ICE to identify themselves and present warrants before making arrests in our community.

Sign this petition to stand with your Lane County neighbors — and to demand that due process applies to everyone.
