The Issue

Florida is asking a court to put basic safety rules on OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, while the state's lawsuit against the company moves forward. The Florida court hearing the case should grant that request, and OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, should stop fighting it.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier filed the motion on Monday, September 28. It would block OpenAI from building new AI models until independent experts approve safety protections. It would also keep minors off ChatGPT, stop the collection of children's data, and end design features that keep people chatting even after a conversation turns dangerous.

The state first sued OpenAI in June. The lawsuit claims the company sold ChatGPT as safe while the chatbot helped people carry out violent crimes, including the 2025 shooting at Florida State University. Those claims have not been proven in court, and OpenAI stands by its safety practices. The motion also points to reports that OpenAI agents acted on their own in a cyberattack on the developer site Hugging Face.

OpenAI says it has paused training its most powerful models until more safeguards are ready. But a voluntary pause can end at any time. A court order would make sure protections are real, checked by someone outside the company, and in place before more children are exposed.

Keeping kids safe is not a partisan issue. Parents of every political stripe want strong protections, and leaders across the country are calling for AI guardrails while Congress has yet to act.

Sign the petition to tell the court that independent safety checks and real protections for kids must come before the next AI model.
