Protect Kent Students: Close Campus During Meningitis & Sepsis Outbreak

Protect Kent Students: Close Campus During Meningitis & Sepsis Outbreak
The Issue
Students at the University of Kent are increasingly concerned about reports of meningitis and sepsis cases affecting members of the campus community. The confirmation of two deaths, along with reports of hospitalisations, has caused understandable concern among students and staff.
Despite the seriousness of the situation, in-person exams and other campus activities are continuing as scheduled. These activities require large numbers of students to gather in enclosed spaces such as lecture theatres and exam halls, where many people remain together for extended periods of time.
Meningitis and sepsis are serious medical conditions that can develop rapidly and require urgent medical attention. Public health guidance generally emphasises the importance of caution, awareness and appropriate precautionary measures when serious illnesses are reported within communities.
Many students feel that they are being placed in a difficult position: attend exams and in-person activities during a period of heightened concern or prioritise their health and wellbeing while risking potential academic consequences. Students should not feel forced to choose between protecting their wellbeing and continuing their education.
Universities have a responsibility to consider the health and safety of their students and staff. At a time when members of the campus community have already been seriously affected, continuing large in-person academic gatherings without additional precautionary measures has raised concerns among many students.
Students deserve to feel safe on campus. We are therefore calling on the University of Kent to consider precautionary steps to prioritise the wellbeing of students and staff during this situation.
