The Issue

Before Alberta was even conceived as a province, sacred agreements were established between the Crown and First Nations peoples. These treaties, rich in history and cultural significance, represent promises and rights granted to Indigenous communities in Alberta. Not only are they fundamental legal instruments, but they also embody the spirit of reconciliation and mutual respect between Indigenous peoples and the Canadian government.

Recent discussions around the separation of Alberta pose a direct threat to these treaties. Such separation narratives neglect the historical and legal precedence that these treaties hold. The treaties are federal in nature, formed long before provincial jurisdictions were established, and thus, remain beyond the purview of any provincial government’s unilateral alterations or nullifications.

Honoring Alberta's Indigenous treaties means recognizing that these lands were inhabited and managed by Indigenous people for thousands of years. It entails respecting the cultural and historical ties that bind them to these lands. They are more than just documents; they are testimonies of survival, resilience, and rights that should be protected.

Concrete action is necessary to ensure these treaties remain intact and continue to protect Indigenous rights in Alberta. The federal government must reaffirm its commitment to these treaties and ensure that any provincial actions or aspirations respect the agreements made. A commitment to reconciliation must include upholding these foundational documents, which recognize Indigenous sovereignty and land claims.

Now is the time to act. Stand with Alberta’s Indigenous communities and protect what is rightfully theirs. Encourage the Canadian government to uphold its duty and ensure these treaties remain respected and honored amidst any political change in Alberta. Sign this petition to defend the integrity and promise of Alberta's Indigenous Treaties.
