Protect IAMAW Members' Right to Vote – Restore Online for the Ratification
The Issue
Every IAMAW member has the right to have their voice heard on an agreement that will impact their wages, benefits, working conditions, and future for years to come. By eliminating online voting many eligible IAMAW members are now at risk of being denied a meaningful opportunity to participate in this important ratification vote.
At Toronto Pearson Airport alone, more than 4,500 IAMAW members work around-the-clock schedules, including nights, weekends, overtime, and rotating shifts. Many members may be unable to attend an in-person polling location due to work obligations, approved leave, family responsibilities, travel, illness, disability, or other legitimate circumstances. Without an online or absentee voting option, these members could effectively lose their voice in a decision that directly affects them.
This petition is not about supporting or opposing the tentative agreement itself. It is about protecting every IAMAW member's fundamental right to vote. A fair and democratic ratification process must be accessible to all eligible members, not only those who can physically attend a polling location during designated voting hours.
The strength of our union is built on member participation. Restricting voting to in-person attendance, without providing an online or absentee alternative, creates barriers that may prevent many members from exercising their democratic rights. Every eligible IAMAW member deserves an equal opportunity to cast a ballot and have their voice counted.
We respectfully call upon the IAMAW to reconsider its decision and implement a secure online voting option, absentee ballot process, or another reasonable alternative that ensures every member has a fair and equal opportunity to participate. The future of our collective agreement should be decided by the full membership not only by those who are able to physically attend a voting location. Democracy within our union is strongest when every member has a voice and every vote can be cast.
