Protect Human Rights: Remove the Petition to End Basic Support and Care for Asylum Seekers

The Issue

Petition 705383, titled “Stop financial and other support for asylum seekers,” is currently live on the UK Parliament Petitions website. It calls for removing basics like food, housing, and medical care from some of the most vulnerable people on Earth - those fleeing war, torture, and persecution.

This is not a political opinion. It’s a demand to strip away basic human rights and dignity from vulnerable people.

The majority of asylum seekers do not come here by choice - they come out of desperation. Many were teachers, nurses, students, and parents who lost everything. Now they live on £6 a day and wait months or years for a decision.

🇬🇧 FACT: The UK is a signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention and has a legal duty to provide protection and basic humanitarian support to asylum seekers.

The vast majority of claims are found to be genuine after rigorous checks — including biometric data, interviews, and country of origin risk assessments.

These people aren’t illegal, or dangerous. They’re desperate.

❌ Denying food and shelter is not a policy position - it’s a human rights violation.

🇬🇧 FACT: Asylum seekers make up just 0.1% of the UK population, most do not come here. The UK takes fewer asylum seekers than countries like Germany, France, and Spain. While 85% of the world’s asylum seekers are hosted by poorer, developing nations.

This petition fuels hate, not solutions. It normalises cruelty and creates a hostile environment for those who need safety the most.

We urge the UK Parliament Petitions Committee to review and remove Petition 705383 immediately, in line with their own standards on offensive or discriminatory content.

Many asylum seekers are fleeing countries affected by decades of war, colonisation, or instability that the UK has been part of. This isn’t about guilt; it’s about stepping up when it matters.

Britain has a proud history of welcoming those in need. We must not let fear, cruelty, or misinformation destroy that. This is about who we are, and who we refuse to become.
