The Issue

Artificial intelligence can be an incredible tool, but it should not be used to make human creativity disposable.

Graphic designers, illustrators, animators, photographers, concept artists, writers, musicians, and other creative professionals have spent years developing skills that companies depend on. As generative AI becomes more capable, there is a growing risk that businesses will eliminate these positions simply because AI can produce content more cheaply.

We are asking lawmakers to establish protections for creative workers affected by generative AI.

We believe new legislation should:

Prevent employers from eliminating established creative positions primarily for the purpose of replacing those workers with generative AI.
Prohibit companies from training AI systems on the work of their employees or contractors and then using those systems to replace the same workers.
Require transparency when jobs are eliminated because of AI implementation.
Require meaningful severance, retraining, reassignment, or other worker protections when AI directly causes job displacement.
Strengthen the rights of artists whose copyrighted work is used to train commercial generative AI systems.
Protect independent artists and small creative businesses from having their original work copied or commercially exploited through AI without authorization.
This petition is not asking for AI to be banned.

AI can help artists brainstorm, work faster, explore ideas, and perform repetitive tasks. The goal should be AI working with human creators—not corporations using AI as a way to eliminate human creativity altogether.

Technological progress should improve people’s lives and expand what humans can accomplish. It should not create a system where companies profit from generations of human-created artwork while eliminating the people who create it.

We ask state and federal lawmakers to begin developing enforceable protections for artists and other creative professionals before widespread AI displacement becomes irreversible.

AI should be a tool for artists, not their replacement.
