The Issue

To: Town of Hamburg Board Members and Planning Officials

We, the undersigned residents and community members, are calling for immediate action regarding the proposed large-scale solar development on Pleasant Avenue in Hamburg, New York.

While we support responsible renewable energy, this project raises serious and unresolved concerns that cannot be overlooked.

Key Concerns:

1. Environmental Impact & Wetlands

The Environmental Assessment Form (EAF) for this project acknowledges the presence of wetlands and potential environmental impact—yet concludes there will be “no significant impact” without providing detailed analysis or supporting data.

This contradiction alone warrants a more comprehensive and transparent environmental review.

2. Risk to Local Water Supply

Residents in this area rely heavily on private wells. Large-scale construction, soil disruption, and potential runoff raise valid concerns about long-term impacts on groundwater quality and availability.

Clean, safe drinking water is not optional—it is essential.

3. Threats to Wildlife & Endangered Species

The project area may impact protected species, including the endangered northern long-eared bat and critical pollinators like monarch butterflies.

Disturbing these ecosystems without thorough study could have irreversible consequences.

4. Loss of Agricultural Land & Rural Character

This land is currently zoned agricultural and contributes to the rural character of our community. Converting it into an industrial-scale solar facility sets a precedent for future developments that may permanently alter Hamburg’s landscape.

5. Traffic, Safety, and Community Impact

With over 100 existing homes and additional residential development nearby, increased construction traffic and ongoing maintenance activity raise concerns about road safety, congestion, and overall quality of life.

Our Request:

We respectfully demand that the Town of Hamburg:

  • Issue a moratorium on large-scale solar developments until proper safeguards are in place
  • Require a full Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for this project
  • Conduct independent studies on groundwater, wildlife, and long-term land use impacts
  • Ensure transparent communication and community involvement before any approvals move forward

Why This Matters:

This is not about opposing renewable energy.

This is about ensuring that development is done responsibly, transparently, and without risking the health, safety, and future of our community.

Once this land is developed, the impact cannot be undone.

We urge local officials to listen to the voices of residents and take the time to fully evaluate this project before making any decisions.

Protect our water. Protect our land. Protect our community.

Hamburg is more than a location—it’s our home. And it deserves thoughtful, responsible stewardship.
