Original Post:
Companies MISO & MGS currently have planned a 190-mile project to install a new powerline system aimed at supplying other regions in the Midwest. This project’s goal is to pass power through our region, not to supply our community. What could this gigantic powerline possibly be designed to supply? They haven’t answered clearly, but I’ve got one guess. One of the proposed routes runs through Lodi, Sauk and directly in front of Gibraltar Rock.
These are not small, but rather 150-200 ft tall towers. The majority of this proposed route cuts directly through private property, fields, farms, and the view from Gibraltar Rock State Natural Viewing Area.
Wisconsin’s power usage has been flat, declining 2.9% over the last 20 years. MISO’s own independent estimate found that the return to this area will only be 40 cents for every dollar spent. Finally, the cost of this project will be passed onto WI and Midwest ratepayers, so we will foot the bill.
We feel that MGS and MISO did not adequately follow Wisconsin Act 89, which requires utility companies to place new powerlines along existing utility corridors or highways/railroads. Please consider signing the petition below to tell these companies they need to re-work their route to follow or upgrade established lines and not destroy our natural landscape.
Ozaukee County petitioners successfully halted a similar ATC proposal in their area this year, so this is possible, but we need as much support as possible!
MGS is hosting an “open house” for “community feedback” on August 25th from 4-7PM at Whispering Pines. Although we were only notified on Thursday 8/6, public comment closes 9/7. We are hoping to have as much community feedback to let them know the impact and to get our local town, county, and state officials to stop this project.
A large part of my father’s legacy was preserving this land. He spent a large portion of his life maintaining and advocating for the preservation of farmland around Gibraltar Rock and in the Driftless region. Please consider sharing, signing our petition, writing/emailing your local officials, anything to help us protect this land!
