At the beginning of June, Florida governor Ron DeSantis announced his plan to end gender-affirming care (including hormone therapy, puberty blockers, and gender reassignment surgery) for trans youth under the age of 18, as well as ending Medicaid coverage for any gender-affirming care regardless of age. This announcement followed the release of a 46-page long report from the state Department of Health justifying the banning of hormone therapy, puberty blockers, and reassignment surgeries for trans youth. This will make gender-affirming care for transgender people in Florida even less accessible than before, thereby leading to a decreased quality of life for these individuals and an increase in mental health struggles. This is yet another attack on the rights of transgender folk following the passing of countless anti-trans bills nationwide, and we cannot just stand here and take it. It is clear that DeSantis does not care for the well-being of Florida’s LGBTQ+ folk. Tell the Florida Health Department and our governor to defend gender-affirming care and trans rights.
