Protect Funding for Foster Children Who Need a Voice—Save CASA LA Programs
The Issue
As someone deeply concerned about the welfare of children in Los Angeles County and beyond, I am urging you to join me in calling on the California state government to protect critical funding for Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) programs. CASA volunteers are trained community advocates appointed by judges to stand up for children in foster care—many of whom have experienced abuse, neglect, and instability. These programs are a lifeline for thousands of children who have already faced more adversity than any child should ever have to endure.
In just six days, a decision will be made in Sacramento during the state budget negotiations, and $20 million in CASA funding hangs in the balance. This funding is crucial for the operation of CASA programs, including ours here in Los Angeles. Without it, programs across the state will be forced to significantly scale back, drastically limiting their ability to provide essential support to foster youth.
CASA volunteers are often the only constant and supportive presence in the lives of these children, advocating for their needs, helping them navigate the complexities of the child welfare system, and championing their best interests in court. Taking away the funding they depend on is not just a reduction in financial support, but a withdrawal of hope and opportunity for thousands of minors.
Statistics from the National CASA/GAL Association for Children demonstrate that children with the support of a CASA volunteer are more likely to find a safe and permanent home, more likely to succeed in school, and are half as likely to re-enter the foster care system than their peers who do not have a CASA advocate. This evidence underscores the irreplaceable value that CASA volunteers bring, emphasizing how much is at stake if this funding is not secured.
The children in our foster system are among the most vulnerable members of our community. We cannot let them face these challenges alone. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that they receive the support and care they so desperately need. Supporting CASA funding is crucial in offering a brighter, more stable future for the children of Los Angeles County.
Now is not the time for cuts. Now is the time for support, compassion, and commitment to these children who need it most. Please join me in urging the California state legislature to stand by our children and maintain full funding for CASA programs. Together, we can make a significant difference. Sign the petition and help protect CASA funding for the children of Los Angeles County.
And feel free to support in other ways like donations or learn how to become a CASA in LA.
Or, see below for even more ways to support!
(1) Call your Assemblymember and State Senator. A two-minute call from a constituent carries weight. Tell them you support reinstating $20 million for California CASA, and why it matters to you personally. Find your representatives at this link. Simply type in your address and it will give you the contact information of your local representative.
(2) Send an email through their official website. Legislative staff track every message. Use our template here as your starting point.
(3) Share on social media. Post about why CASA matters to you. Tag @casa.la on Instagram and other platforms. One post can move someone else to act.
Every call, every email, and every share adds up. And right now, with six days left, every single one could make the difference.
