The Issue

For nearly two decades, we have proudly served as a local councillors in West Oxfordshire, dedicated to ensuring our unique and charming rural towns and villages thrive. One of the key elements in our community's success has been the availability of free parking in our town and village centres. Free parking is not a luxury; it is a necessity that supports our local economy, eases life for residents, and preserves the vibrancy and accessibility of our community hubs.

The Liberal Democrats at County Hall are consulting on a plan to end free parking.

Free parking isn't merely a convenience for those living and working in our rural areas; it is a critical driver of economic health. Local shops, small businesses, and family-run stores rely on the accessibility that free parking provides. It encourages foot traffic, not only drawing residents but also attracting visitors from neighboring areas to explore our unique offerings. When people can conveniently and affordably park their cars, they are far more likely to spend time shopping, dining, and engaging with our local services.

Moreover, in communities like ours, where public transportation may not always meet everyone’s needs, having the option of free parking makes a significant difference to daily life. It supports our elder residents, young families, and anyone who relies on their vehicle to participate in community activities, attend appointments, or simply visit loved ones. Removing free parking could force some individuals to limit their involvement in community life, leading to isolation and an erosion of social bonds.

The introduction of parking fees could also have detrimental environmental impacts. Faced with the prospect of paying for parking, individuals might choose to drive longer distances to other areas with free options, increasing their carbon footprint unnecessarily. Our free parking policy currently promotes short but frequent trips, which can keep emissions lower.

The cultural life of West Oxfordshire is something we truly cherish. Free parking plays an often-overlooked role in maintaining the cultural rhythm of our towns and villages, allowing community events, markets, and festivals to flourish without barriers. As Witneians who have witnessed firsthand the benefits that free parking provides, we know how vital it is to protect this asset.

We are calling on the local council and community leaders to commit to preserving free parking throughout West Oxfordshire. Let us continue to support our local economy, ensure accessibility for all, and maintain the lively community spirit that makes our towns and villages exceptional places to live.

Please sign this petition to protect free parking in our beloved towns and villages of West Oxfordshire and safeguard the future of our community.
