The issue

We are calling on the Australian Parliament to reconsider and cease the proposed expansion of hate speech laws. This consideration is of utmost importance as these proposed changes threaten to undermine fundamental civil liberties while failing to effectively address the root causes of violence.

Freedom of expression is not just a democratic right; it is the bedrock of a free society. It serves as a shield for citizens against the excessive power of the state, ensuring that individuals can voice their opinions and concerns without fear of retribution or censorship. Expanding hate speech laws poses a risk of stifling essential debate and dialogue within a democratic society.

Current proposals do not adequately address or prevent acts of violence and may inadvertently compromise public safety by diverting resources from more effective measures. Restricting speech has historically failed to meaningfully reduce instances of violence, and these laws risk being used as tools for political control, limiting dissent and suppressing critical thought.

Civil liberties should not be sacrificed under the guise of public safety. Instead, efforts should focus on addressing the actual causes of violence, such as socio-economic disparities, mental health issues, and education, with targeted interventions that respect fundamental human rights.

We urge the Parliament to prioritise measures that truly enhance public safety while preserving the essential freedoms of its citizens. Rather than expanding hate speech laws, Australia could lead the way by advocating for policies that respect the diversity of thought and protect the rights and liberties of all its citizens.

Join us in defending civil liberties and promoting effective public safety strategies. Please sign this petition to stand against the expansion of hate speech laws in Australia.
