Protect First Street: Stop WMATA's Proposed C55 Bus

Protect First Street: Stop WMATA's Proposed C55 Bus
The Issue
Bloomingdale residents are outraged by WMATA's plan to run the new C55 bus route down First Street NW, a fragile historic district plagued by road sinkholes, flooding, and drainage issues that have compromised the structural integrity of our roads and houses. The proposed bus route prioritizes the interests of politicians and real estate developers over the historic district of Bloomingdale and its established community.
- The heavy bus traffic, estimated as equivalent to the wear of 1.5 million cars per day, poses severe risks to First Street's infrastructure. WMATA hasn’t demonstrated that the street can handle this burden without significant damage.
- The introduction of frequent bus service (70 times a day, from 5am to midnight) would disrupt Bloomingdale’s quiet, residential character, causing increased noise, pollution, and traffic safety concerns, while potentially requiring street widening and the cutting back of trees and removal of parking spaces.
- Residents are being ignored by WMATA, the Mayor’s office, and the ANC, who seem to prioritize developer interests over community welfare. ANC Commissioners failed to inform the neighborhood about these changes, raising doubts about whose interests they serve.
- Taxpayers will bear the financial burden of road damage and maintenance costs, as well as repair closures and vehicle wear and tear – all of which would be significantly lower if the route were moved to a more suitable street like North Capitol.
The Bloomingdale Civic Association unanimously opposes the route, calling for action to protect the community. Residents are rallying against this ill-conceived plan.
Let your voice be heard: a bus on First Street NW is bad for Bloomingdale.
- Safety Concerns: Cyclists and pedestrians will face increased risks. First Street NW’s structural issues make it unsuitable for heavy bus traffic, which could damage homes.
- Community Disruption: Increased bus traffic will damage the residential character and safety of Bloomingdale, increase pollution, and require removing parking spaces.
- Lack of Transparency: WMATA and local representatives have withheld information from residents and rejected unanimous community demands for opposition and action.
- Financial Impact: The plan wastes tax money. Road maintenance and damage will be higher on our small street, and will result in regular repairs and disruption.
- Community Opposition: Bloomingdale residents and the Civic Association strongly oppose the new bus route.
