When ICE agents came into Riverside Community Hospital in June 2025, they demanded access to a patient without a warrant. A nurse said no. She followed the law and protected her patient’s privacy. But she was put in a terrible position.

This is happening at other hospitals across California. Nurses are being forced to choose between their jobs and their duty to care. Some are unsure of their rights. Some may fear speaking up. This is not safe—for staff or for patients.

California passed Senate Bill 81 to stop ICE from entering hospitals without a warrant. Now hospitals must make sure staff are trained and protected.

We are asking HCA Healthcare and other hospital systems to take urgent action:

• Train all staff to handle ICE encounters legally and safely
• Protect workers who refuse to break the law or share private information
• Create clear, written policies that are shared hospital-wide

Nurses should never have to face this alone. They are caregivers, not law enforcement. Let them do their jobs without fear.
