The issue

Imagine the joy of wanting to start a new chapter in life with someone you love, only to be met with the threat of financial insecurity. This is not just a hypothetical scenario, but a reality for many Australians receiving the Disability Support Pension (DSP), including my dear friend.

My friend, like so many others, faces the possibility of losing her financial independence because she wants to live with her partner. The current social security policies in Australia mean that individuals on the DSP can be severely disadvantaged simply because they enter into a relationship. This isn't fair, and it's time for change.

The DSP is a vital lifeline for those with disabilities, ensuring they can lead dignified, independent lives. However, the assessment rules unfairly adjust or cut off this essential support based on a recipient's living situation, undermining the support system's integrity.

Statistics show that people with disabilities face extra living costs estimated at 40% more than those without disabilities (source: People with Disability Australia). Despite this, current policy adjustments force recipients either to struggle financially or to refrain from cohabiting, challenging their basic right to family life and security.

The solution is straightforward: the government should amend these policies to ensure the DSP remains individually assessed, regardless of relationship status. By doing so, we maintain the dignity of disabled individuals and protect their financial security, allowing them to make life choices freely and without fear of economic loss.

We urge the Australian Government and Members of Parliament to review these policies and make necessary amendments. It's time to put an end to this unfair penalization and acknowledge that love should not come with a financial penalty.

Stand with us in calling for a fairer system for all Australians with disabilities. Sign the petition to protect the rights and independence of those receiving the Disability Support Pension.
