The Issue

Growing Old Shouldn't Mean Going Broke!
My name is Rebecca Taylor, and I'm a Delaware mother and daughter who is absolutely outraged by the cost of senior living and elderly care in this country.

I never imagined that trying to provide my aging mother with a safe, comfortable place to live would become one of the biggest financial burdens of my life.

I have personally paid $10,046 out of my own pocket to secure senior housing for my mother. Her monthly housing expense is $5,023, and despite that enormous amount, she still requires additional assistance with everyday activities.

My mother receives approximately $2,050 a month in Social Security. How is someone supposed to afford housing that costs more than twice their monthly Social Security income?

And my mother isn't the only one facing this problem.

Some senior living facilities charge upwards of $10,500 per month for a studio apartment with care services. Even independent living communities can cost $3,200 or more per month, with additional charges for personal care.

When did growing old become something only wealthy people can afford?

These are our parents, grandparents, veterans, and hardworking Americans who spent their lives paying taxes, raising families, and contributing to society.

Now, when they need help the most, many are expected to hand over their retirement savings, their Social Security income, and practically everything they've worked their entire lives for.

And when that isn't enough, their children are expected to make up the difference.

THIS IS NOT SUSTAINABLE, AND IT IS NOT RIGHT!

I fully understand that senior living facilities have operating expenses. Caregivers deserve fair wages, buildings need maintenance, and residents deserve quality food and compassionate care.

But families deserve to know exactly what they're paying for, why prices are so high, and whether those charges are reasonable.

What We Are Demanding
We are calling on Delaware Governor Matt Meyer and the Delaware General Assembly to introduce legislation addressing the senior living affordability crisis.

We want:

Fair pricing regulations that protect seniors and families from unreasonable charges and unjustified price increases.
Mandatory financial transparency so families understand how their money is being spent.
Protections against excessive additional fees for essential personal care services.
Affordable senior housing and care options for middle-income families who earn too much to qualify for certain assistance programs but cannot afford private care.
Expanded assistance for family caregivers who are sacrificing their own financial stability to care for aging parents.
Independent oversight and accountability to investigate unfair pricing practices and protect vulnerable residents.
We are not asking caregivers to work for less. We want them to receive fair wages and the support they deserve.

We are asking lawmakers to make sure the cost of senior living is fair, justified, and affordable.

Why This Matters to Every American
This isn't just about my mother.

It's about every elderly person who is afraid of becoming a financial burden.

It's about every daughter and son working themselves to exhaustion to care for a parent.

It's about every senior who wants to maintain their independence but cannot afford the help they need.

And it's about every one of us who will eventually grow old.

I'm starting this petition in Delaware because change has to start somewhere. My hope is that Delaware can lead the way toward protecting seniors across the entire country.

Our elderly deserve dignity, compassion, and affordable care.

Their families deserve financial protection.

And lawmakers need to recognize that the current cost of senior living is pushing ordinary families toward financial ruin.

PLEASE SIGN AND SHARE THIS PETITION!

Help us demand that Delaware lawmakers investigate senior living costs, hold public hearings, and introduce meaningful legislation to protect our elderly population.

Delaware First. Dignity for Every Senior. Affordable Care for Every Family.
