This petition seeks to preserve the current right-to-buy discount for existing council tenants, with any new legislation affecting only new or non-secure tenancies. Council Tenants dealing with mould and disrepair should also have the opportunity to purchase their homes by the deadline set, yet many banks won’t approve a mortgage for properties with such issues. We call on the government to pause any reduction in discounts for qualifying tenants and to require councils to complete essential maintenance to meet the Decent Homes Standard. Additionally, we urge the government to enforce stricter accountability for local authorities, including fines and penalties for failing to conduct cyclical maintenance and resolve disrepair issues in a timely manner.
My home, meant to be safe and comfortable space, is caught up in conversations around disrepair, with redevelopment promised since 2009 still unmet and no regular maintenance done. Now, I’m at a point where I must look past the Council’s neglect/ failings, to take a rare chance to move up the housing ladder. Proposed cuts to right-to-buy discounts ignore the poor state of much social housing and the struggles of residents dealing with regeneration or disrepair. Instead of reducing discounts and rushing sales, the priority should be on enforcing higher standards to improve the current stock. Local councils must be held accountable to maintain social housing to a standard residents can be proud of.
This issue is more urgent than ever. Tenants dealing with disrepair and poor housing quality should not be further disadvantaged. Local councils must be held accountable for treating tenants fairly, as government support has often fallen short.
We urge the government to stand up for better housing opportunities, uphold discount rates, and ensure that social housing meets a standard tenants can take pride in.
