Implement Traffic Calming Measures in Croydon Park Before It's Too Late

The Issue
Residents of Croydon Park, particularly those living on Melrose, Hampton, Clyde, Dunmore, and Wentworth Streets, are facing a daily battle with dangerous traffic conditions. Commuters are using our residential streets as high-speed shortcuts, putting our community at serious risk. With a new childcare center planned for Dunmore Street, we cannot wait for accidents to happen before taking action.

Why This Matters

• Our streets have become unofficial "rat runs" for commuters avoiding main roads.
• Residents have reported numerous near-misses and dangerous incidents
• A new childcare center is planned for Dunmore Street, which will bring more traffic
• Current assessment criteria only consider crash statistics, not prevention
• The council acknowledges speeding is a growing problem but hasn't implemented solutions

The Human Cost

As a resident of Dunmore Street, I've personally witnessed:

• Cars speeding through residential areas at dangerous speeds
• Residents struggling to cross streets safely
•  Residents struggle to turn onto Wentworth street safely
• Multiple near-miss incidents at blind spots
• Growing anxiety among parents about their children's safety

What We Need
We're calling on Canterbury Bankstown Council to:

1. Implement preventative traffic calming measures before accidents occur
2. Review their assessment criteria to include potential risks, not just crash history
3. Install speed bumps or other traffic calling measures, particularly near the planned and existing childcare centres
4. Increase visible traffic safety measures in our neighborhood
5. Work with Transport for NSW to implement additional safety signage

The Current Response Isn't Enough
The Council's current position is to wait for accidents to happen before taking action. Their response relies on:

• Crash data from the past five years
• A criteria system that doesn't consider prevention
• Suggesting residents put stickers on bins as a solution
• Referring speeding issues to police without supporting infrastructure

We need proactive solutions, not reactive ones.

Our Community Deserves Better
We shouldn't have to wait for tragedy to happen before action is taken. All residents deserve to feel safe walking in their own neighborhood. The time to act is now.
