The Issue

Rural communities in Cornwall rely heavily on taxis — especially where public transport is limited or non-existent.

Cornwall Council’s plan to unify the six different taxi tariffs (likely choosing the most expensive one) and scrap the 6 taxi zones will drive up fares, destroy rural services, and leave isolated residents stranded.

We’ve seen this before.
When the former borough council areas abolished zoning in 1997, taxi drivers abandoned villages to chase work in the bigger towns. Rural villages were left without essential transport — especially through winter — and recovery took years. Even now, it is incomplete.

Scrapping taxi zones across the entire county would be catastrophic for rural Cornwall.

Taxi zones protect rural communities the same way councillor wards protect rural voters: by guaranteeing fair, local service — no matter how big, busy, or profitable an area is.

We call on Cornwall Council to:

✅ Protect existing taxi zones — protect your public.
✅ Guarantee rural residents access to vital transport.
✅ Stand up for fair services, not just urban convenience.

We urge all newly elected councillors to stand with us and protect Cornwall’s rural communities — before it’s too late.
