The Issue

William “Rick” Singer was the mastermind behind the biggest college admissions scandal in U.S. history.

Through lies, bribes, and fraud, he helped wealthy families cheat the system—undermining the fairness of college admissions for everyone else. He pled guilty to multiple federal crimes, admitted to taking over $25 million from clients, and was sentenced to prison.

Now, he’s back.

Just months after his release, Singer is once again working in college admissions advising—this time for a company owned by his sister.

A judge has allowed it, but only under the condition that he post a court-ordered disclaimer disclosing his criminal past. That disclaimer? It’s buried deep in the Terms and Conditions of the website.

This is not accountability. It’s a loophole.

Families seeking guidance for their children shouldn’t have to dig through fine print to learn they’re hiring someone who once faked athletic profiles and rigged SAT scores for a fee. Students deserve to know their advisor didn’t just break the rules—he built an entire business on doing so.

We’re calling on the California Department of Consumer Affairs, the U.S. Department of Education, and relevant licensing and oversight bodies to take action now.

Rick Singer should be permanently barred from working in any college admissions, educational consulting, or student advising role. Period.

This isn’t about denying second chances. It’s about protecting vulnerable families and young people from someone who built his reputation on deception. Singer’s return to this industry is not just a risk—it’s a slap in the face to the students who play by the rules, the families who can’t buy their way in, and the educators trying to restore trust in the admissions process.

Rebuilding public confidence in education means closing the door on those who once exploited it. If we let Rick Singer step back into this role, we send the message that consequences don’t matter—and that money and manipulation still win.
