Protect Charlotte’s Shrinking Tree Canopy Before It Vanishes

The Issue

disappearing. Since 2012, we’ve lost thousands of trees to unchecked development, storm damage, and aging growth. Now, even the city’s own experts admit we’re falling behind: by 2050, we could lose nearly 10% of our canopy unless urgent action is taken.

Trees aren’t just scenery. They cool our streets, protect against flooding, clean our air, and give Charlotte its character. But the majority of these trees stand on residential land—where protections are weakest and removals are growing fastest.

Charlotte’s City Council is set to vote on a new tree protection plan in 2026, but that can’t come soon enough. We need a commitment now to safeguard native and heritage trees, increase tree planting in high-risk areas, support homeowners in preserving healthy trees, and replace invasive species like the Bradford pear with trees that protect our environment, not harm it.

This city deserves a canopy that lasts for generations. Sign this petition to demand a strong, lasting plan that protects what’s left—and helps restore what’s already been lost.
