Protect Canadian children from social media harm
The Issue
Growing up should be a time of exploration, growth, and learning, not anxiety, insecurity, and unreal expectations manufactured by social media. As a parent, I have witnessed firsthand how social media and smartphones are reshaping what it means to be a child today. I have seen children grapple with anxiety, struggle with sleep, suffer from low self-esteem, and feel relentless pressure to stay connected online. They are constantly bombarded by images and narratives that often contribute negatively to their mental and emotional well-being. Parents do their best to shield their kids, but it's becoming increasingly clear that these efforts, though noble, are not enough.
Across Canada, children are spending more time on apps specifically engineered to keep them scrolling through an endless sea of content, much of which is inappropriate and unhealthy for their developing minds. The addictive nature of these platforms pulls children into a loop of constant comparison and consumption. Mental health professionals have flagged this trend as alarming. Research indicates that excessive use of social media can lead to increased rates of anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues among youngsters.
It's time for decisive action. We call on the Government of Canada to enact a comprehensive Youth Digital Protection Law. This federal legislation would establish stringent guidelines and protective measures that limit young people's exposure to harmful content and addictive functionalities of digital platforms. By doing so, we would be taking a crucial step towards safeguarding our children's mental health and ensuring they have a healthier and more balanced upbringing.
A Youth Digital Protection Law should address age-appropriate content, integrate parental controls, and set limits on user engagement time to mitigate the lure of social media. Enacting legislation of this kind would align Canada's policy with existing protections in other countries, setting a global standard for digital youth safety.
Please sign this petition and urge legislators to prioritize the well-being of Canadian children. By taking action now, we can foster a safer, more supportive digital environment for our youth, helping them to grow into healthy, confident individuals.
