Protect Cabbage Tree Harbour's Marine Ecosystem

Protect Cabbage Tree Harbour's Marine Ecosystem
The issue
As an avid ocean swimmer, the thrill of encountering vibrant marine life and the serenity of the underwater world at Cabbage Tree Harbour, Norah Head (photo taken by Wander), are truly unmatched. This area is a haven of biodiversity, playing host to an array of incredible species such as green turtles, wobbegongs, Port Jackson sharks, grey nurse sharks, and colorful tropical and subtropical fish. The harbour also serves as a sanctuary for blue gropers, smooth rays, eagle rays, and fiddler rays, weaving a rich tapestry of life beneath its waves.
However, the vital ecosystem of Cabbage Tree Harbour is under threat. Spearfishing and recreational fishing activities are causing significant harm to the delicate reef structures and endangering these rare and magnificent species. The proximity of Cabbage Tree Harbour to the Norah Head National Surfing Reserve at Soldiers Beach, a popular destination for locals and tourists, further heightens the need for protective measures.
Scuba diving, boating, snorkelling and swim would continue. Fishing would relocate to Hargraves Beach and continue off shore.
Designating Cabbage Tree Harbour from Norah Head Lighthouse to Jenny Dixon beach as an aquatic reserve would institute crucial regulatory protections, preventing overfishing and fostering sustainable marine life conservation. Such designation not only aids in safeguarding the precious species inhabiting this marine environment but also ensures the continued enjoyment and survival of a critical part of our natural heritage.
Many thoughtful ocean lovers and environmental advocates are supporting this cause, rallying for swift action to curb further damage and initiate recovery for the existing marine life. Through civic action and collective determination, we have the power to create a lasting impact that will preserve this quintessential marine ecosystem for generations to come.
Your support can drive this critical change. Let's stand together to protect Cabbage Tree Harbour and ensure a future where the marine environment can thrive.
Sign this petition to urge authorities to act now and declare Cabbage Tree Harbour an aquatic reserve for the benefit of our diverse marine life and the community of Central Coast, NSW.
