Protect Brunswick's 45 Acres of Forest from Development

Protect Brunswick's 45 Acres of Forest from Development
The Issue
We need your help!
Our petition is PROACTIVE! Plans have not been formally submitted to the city for development as of yet. We would rather be ahead of the curve instead of reactive when the plans ultimately are submitted.
The largest undeveloped residential wooded area left in Brunswick is in immediate danger of becoming yet another housing development. The immediate area this will impact are homeowners on Westwood Avenue, Lakewood Avenue, Westchester Drive, Parkland Oval, Lyman Circle, Courtland Oval, Magnolia Drive, and their surrounding streets.
This area is not just vital for the local environment, but also promotes biodiversity and is home to countless animals. Recently, a significant portion of our local green space, 45 acres of vibrant forest, has been sold to developers looking to transform it into a housing development. This development will not only pave over trees and wildlife habitats but will also transform our quiet dead-end streets, altering our neighborhoods.
Aside from the luxury of being surrounded by forest, we also must take into consideration the environmental impact of these developments. Prior to the sale of these properties, the largest property was zoned as forestland. The other two properties have areas of wetland.
Trees play an integral role in absorbing carbon dioxide, mitigating floods, and maintaining air quality. According to the U.S. Forest Service, an acre of trees absorbs enough CO2 over a year to equal the amount produced by driving a car 26,000 miles. Losing 45 acres would exponentially increase our carbon footprint and displace countless species that call this area home.
When will over-development stop? When will someone put their foot down and say this is enough? The answer is never. When there is profit to be made, there will always be a push for more. Greedy builders and land development companies have taken over our city, but this is our chance to change that.
