The Issue

We, the undersigned residents, neighbors, and supporters of the Brittany Hills community, are calling on Columbus City Council to take action and help preserve the integrity, safety, and history of the neighborhood by opposing the construction of a large apartment complex at 2618 Bethesda Avenue.

Concerns:

🏘️ Community Character

Brittany Hills is a single-family neighborhood with strong roots, pride in homeownership, and a close-knit culture. High-density apartments will disrupt that balance and drastically change the look and feel of our community.

🚨 Infrastructure & Safety

We already face:

Frequent flooding and power outages
Dangerous traffic congestion on roads like Sunbury and Mock
A lack of increased police presence, raising safety concerns

🚌 Limited Public Transit Access

The COTA bus service in Brittany Hills is infrequent, making it difficult for residents without personal vehicles to access jobs, groceries, or essential services. Adding more residents without improving transportation access will create additional strain.

🌳 Environmental Impact

The construction would affect nearby green space, wildlife, and create additional runoff problems in an area already prone to flooding.

🛒 Lack of Local Services

There are no nearby essential resources such as grocery stores, pharmacies, or health services to support more residents.

📜 Historic Legacy

Our community is part of Columbus’ rich African-American history, with ties to the Underground Railroad, and sits near the historic Valley Dale Ballroom. This area deserves to be preserved and respected.

🚨“The Brittany Hills community includes many elderly homeowners who have expressed that they felt pressured into accepting this development, not out of agreement but due to fatigue and frustration with the process. This does not represent informed or enthusiastic consent. We believe their voices have not been truly heard, and urge City Council to consider a moratorium or reassessment of this zoning approval.”

What We Support:

✅ Building single-family homes that match the character of Brittany Hills

✅ Creating a community center that serves our youth, seniors, and families

✅ Collaborating with residents to find smart, community-driven solutions

🗞️ “Request that for future zoning and variance proposals of this magnitude, the city expand the notification radius to include ALL residents and property owners within at least a one-mile radius to ensure the community is adequately informed and has the opportunity to participate.”

We respectfully ask Columbus City Council to reject the apartment complex plan for 2618 Bethesda Avenue and protect the future of Brittany Hills.
