Protect British History: We Support the Scheduling of the South of Marske Long Flat Field.

118 ACRES OF LAND TO THE SOUTH OF MARSKE BY THE SEA BOUNDED BY LONGBECK ROAD, A1085 AND A174, REDCAR, TS11 6EZ
Grid Ref: Easting (x) 462917, Northing (y) 522302
The site comprises of at least 50 acres of scientifically proven Bronze Age burial mounds, Iron Age roundhouses, an extensive Roman Ladder settlement, an ancient road, and medieval activity to 1500. A further 30 acres, which require excavation, and have been subject to professional archaeological speculation, point to the presence of more Iron Age roundhouses and a substantial Roman Villa complex. Saxon and Viking era finds have now also been recorded on site.
The field provided a potential congregation point with Roman roads running south, east and west and was the original Marske settlement.
The Roman ladder settlement alone, ranks in the top ten ever discovered in the UK in terms of size.
Redcar and Cleveland has one of the lowest scheduled protection rates for historic monuments in the UK. Archaeologists have revealed that countless Roman attributes have been lost to development in the Redcar area in the past 70 years.
On 28th January 2024, the archaeologist Dr Kendra Quinn applied for the Long Flat site to be scheduled to prevent Miller Homes and Taylor Wimpey digging up the site and converting it into 812 homes, a fast food outlet, a pub, a petrol station and budget hotel.
This petition is in support of Dr Quinn, and urges Historic England and the Secretary of States for Communities and Culture to halt the development of Long Flat, South of Marske, and preserve the historic site so that the people of Teesside and North East Yorkshire can fill the gaps in their historical origins and provide historical education for future generations.
