Protect Bramshill House & Park

The Issue

We want Hart District Council to refuse planning application 22/00658/FUL, which affects Bramshill House and Park - one of the most important Jacobean places in England. It was built by one of the most influential men of the era, Edward Lord Zouche, between 1605 and 1612 as a symbol of his importance and a place to entertain the king. The gardens are probably the best surviving Jacobean gardens in the country. It's also within a site of special scientific interest. The House and Park are both Grade I listed by Historic England.

From 1953 to 2015 it was owned by the Home Office and used for a residential training site for the police service. For most of this period they were exempt from normal planning permission, and so built a number of university style buildings in the grounds.

Developers want to build 197 new homes on the area currently occupied by some of the 'modern' police college buildings. This would create a new housing estate in a rural area, spoiling both the Park and the setting of the House forever. They claim that new housing is necessary to fund repairs to the House, following which it will be used as a wedding/events and filming location.

In summary, a nationally important historic park is not a suitable location for suburban development and a house of this significance should be open to the public.
