Protect Black women’s health: demand safer hair products and honest labeling
The Issue
Black women deserve hair care products that do not put their health at risk. Scientific research increasingly shows that many hair products—especially those marketed to Black women—contain endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). These chemicals interfere with hormone systems and have been linked to serious health outcomes, including uterine fibroids, infertility, early puberty, and hormone-dependent cancers.
In 2019, a study published in the journal 'Environmental Research' revealed that over 80% of tested beauty products marketed to Black women contained dangerous chemicals not listed on the labels. It's alarming that Black women often use these products at a higher rate due extended grooming styles such as relaxers, weaves, and wigs. This chronic exposure increases their risk for the aforementioned health concerns.
The lack of transparency in product labeling means that Black women and their families are unknowingly exposed to harmful substances. This systematic neglect is not only a public health crisis but also an urgent matter of racial and gender justice.
The beauty industry must take immediate responsibility for the safety of their consumers. Urgent action is necessary: regulatory agencies must enforce stricter safety standards for hair products, mandating comprehensive testing and clear, truthful labeling.
We demand the FDA to expand its regulatory frameworks and ensure that all hair care products are rigorously tested for EDCs and other harmful chemicals before reaching the market. Beauty companies must reformulate their products to eliminate these chemicals and prioritize consumer safety over profits.
By signing this petition, you are standing up for the health rights of Black women everywhere. Your support can compel brands and regulators to act swiftly, ensuring safe and transparent hair care for all. Sign and share this petition—our health depends on it.
