Protect Bellambi Public Housing Estate!

The issue

Our public housing is under attack.

Only a fifteen-minute drive from the centre of Wollongong, Bellambi Estate is right on the beach and is made up of townhouses and stand-alone houses.

Currently, about 95 percent of the 500 residences are public housing provided by Homes NSW (formerly the NSW Housing Commission).

The NSW State Government and property developers are eying off the Estate to build luxury apartments and airbnb's. The Labor government and Homes NSW are rezoning the estate to allow the public land to be handed over to private developers, and allow a massive increase in density, adding 2,000 dwellings. The vast majority of this will be private housing.

Homes NSW is promising only 30 percent “social housing”— a term that covers both public housing and community housing provided by private charities and NGOs, which comes with fewer rights for tenants.

There isn't even a guarantee in the Redevelopment Plan to accommodate this measure.

We are asked to trust them to uphold their word.

Just like the tenants of Waterloo Housing Towers, Glebe Public Housing and the Sirius Building in Sydney who were promised by NSW State Housing Minister, Rose Jackson, that the estates slated for demolition by the Coalition government, including Glebe and Waterloo South, that their homes would not be sold off or privatised if Labor were elected in 2023.

That was a lie.

The Sirius Building is no longer, Wentworth Road housing in Glebe is currently rubble and the Waterloo towers are still under threat with an ongoing campaign against the demolition.

In the midst of a housing crisis, the last thing we should be doing is ripping up public homes to allow real estate developers to further enrich themselves by making housing that wildly unaffordable for the majority of people.

They are robbing from the poor to give to the rich.

Around 100 public housing tenants and their supporters rallied to protect public housing at Bellambi Estate in March.

Sign the petition to show your support to the tenants of Bellambi who reject the plan to demolish their homes, their community.

Sign to save and expand our public housing.
