The Issue

I was absolutely sickened when I came across a post on a Mount Holly community page about the fate of the Ashurst Mansion. A beautiful historic property, rich with stories and a living testament to our past, is now under threat by developers who are planning to bulldoze it to erect two 20-unit apartment complexes. It's unfathomable that such shortsightedness would lead us to lose a piece of history that has shaped our community's identity.

The Ashurst Mansion and its surrounding grounds are not just ordinary buildings; they are part of the fabric of American history. The area is known for its role in the Underground Railroad, a fact that enriches our cultural heritage and connects us all to a profound journey for freedom and equality. This area is nationally registered, and yet, despite this recognition, developers have already started tearing out century-old trees, irreversibly altering the landscape in the name of profit.

We cannot allow greed to erase our past. Destroying these historical landmarks doesn't just strip Mount Holly of its cultural and historical identity; it disrespects all who have fought and preserved history up to this very day. Development projects can always be modified, but history once lost can never be reclaimed.

Many have already voiced their outrage against granting the variance for this development. Community members, historians, and heritage professionals all demand that we preserve the heritage of Mount Holly. Alternatives should be explored—perhaps repurposing the mansion through adaptive reuse practices or transforming the land into a historical park, which would not only conserve the area's legacy but also cater to the community’s development needs.

We urge the Mount Holly Planning Board, local government leaders, and preservation authorities to deny the variance requested by these developers and explore ways to safeguard Ashurst Mansion and its surrounding historic land.

Join us in taking a stand for our history and our community. Sign this petition to protect Ashurst Mansion and ensure that future generations have the opportunity to connect with our past, learn from it, and cherish the legacy of Mount Holly.
